First, A glossary of terms:

NIC: Network Interface Card - Used to connect your computer to a cable modem or router.
Cable Modem - Unit in which your television cable wire is attached, from there it is connected to your computer using a NIC. 
DSL Modem - Modem to link up to DSL Line.  Internal, like the common modems. PCI interface, check your computer first. 
Router- Used to connect a DSL Line to your network, by way of  NIC Cards. Only if several computers need access. 
NODE - A computer or other related hardware in a network. 
TCP/IP - Internet Protocol - A number identifying a computer. Much like a phone number
Network Neighborhood - A list of computers on a connected network. Much like your phone extensions. 
ADSL- Home type DSL line, slower upload speeds then download. 
SDSL - Business DSL, equal uploads and downloads. Web Server ready
ISP- Internet Service Provider - A company that provides access to all of the World Wide Web. I.E. AOL. MSN, Prodigy

So now lets see if we can look at the differences you may experience. Below is  a list of pros and cons of Cable verses ADSL. We are only comparing Cable VS ADSL, If you require Business DSL,  you should do more homework, there is allot of difference between the speeds and services offered.  We will included some links below that may help. Understand, the thoughts stated here are our expressed opinion, and pricing and other information may vary, use as a guide and not fact.

Monthly Cost: $39.95 Installation $30 to $150 if needed. 
NIC Card is not supplied. Cost: $20 to $60, Plus Install
Cost of Modem: FREE  Requires 2 Year Contract
Monthly Cost: $39.95 Installation and Hardware Free.

 Much faster then 56k modem, Claim is up to 100 times faster

 Speeds will vary greatly, dependant on the number of people on at the same time in your network.  Speed is 372 Download, 272 Upload. You download more then you upload. Speed won't vary, it is  your own phone line, right to your providers network. Not available all over, must be within certain distance from central office. 
Always on, no need to sign on. Your computer can be accessed by Cablevision employees, and could be seen by your neighbors. Always on, no need to dial in. More secure from outsiders looking at computer.  If not careful, can be accessed by other computers.

Reliable as Cablevision TV. If cable is out, so is the internet.  Very reliable If phone lines go out, so does the internet. 
**Note: You do not have to be an AOL customer to use AOL Instant messenger. You will need to come up with new screen names but you can still get it for free.
